Common questions

Things people often ask

Is this therapy or counselling?

No. Coaching is different from therapy or counselling. I don't diagnose or treat mental health conditions. Instead, I work with young people to build self-awareness, discover their strengths, and develop practical life skills. If I feel someone needs clinical support, I'll always recommend they speak to an appropriate professional.

Where do sessions take place?

Most of my work happens outdoors, in and around Brighton & Hove โ€” parks, woodland, and along the coast. Some sessions take place in schools or community spaces. Online sessions are also available for one-to-one coaching if that works better for you.

What if my teen doesn't want to come?

That's really normal. Most young people are a bit unsure at first. I always start with a relaxed, no-pressure conversation to see if it feels right. There's no commitment until everyone โ€” including your young person โ€” is on board. And sometimes they surprise you.

Do parents attend sessions?

It depends on the programme. For one-to-one coaching, sessions are usually just with the young person โ€” but I include a parent/guardian session at the start and end of longer programmes so you're part of the journey. Family coaching sessions are designed for you to attend together.

How long are sessions and how many will we need?

Individual coaching sessions are typically 50โ€“60 minutes. Structured programmes like Flourishing Routes run for 6 weeks (one session per week). Some people find a few sessions is enough, others continue with ongoing support. We'll figure out what's right together โ€” there's no lock-in.

Is what my child shares confidential?

Yes. What's discussed in sessions stays between us โ€” that trust is essential. However, there are limits: if I believe someone is at risk of serious harm, I have a duty to act. I explain this clearly to every young person (and their parents) before we start, so everyone knows where they stand. You can read more on my safeguarding page.

What age range do you work with?

I work with young people aged 6โ€“25, as well as parents, families, and educators. Different programmes are designed for different ages โ€” Seeds of Happiness is for ages 6โ€“11, Flourishing Routes and The Journey are for ages 13โ€“18, and one-to-one coaching is available for young adults up to 25.
